Ernie Athersmith 1915-2013

The funeral has taken place on the 16th April of J.E. (Ernie) Athersmith. Ernie was a member of Aldridge Photographic Society for nearly fifty years.

Ernie joined the club in the early 1960's and continued his membership until his early 90's.

Ernie was a cyclist, walker and motorist with a great love of the outdoors which showed in his passion for landscape photography.  He was a black and white print enthusiast printing 20inx16in flush mounted prints and he won many awards in the club for his work.

Ernie often entertained members with his 35mm slides showing  his exploits in Wales, the Lake District, Scotland and Europe.

Ernie served in many positions in the club and being an accountant by trade kept his eye on the financial side of the society until his late 80’s. He was the President in 1974.  Ernie was also a leader of the  Sunday walks with the society, using his extensive knowledge of the local countryside.

Dorothy Athersmith, Ernie's wife, was President in 1978. She was a member of the Ladies Social Committee and she organised the social side of the club with the highlight of the year being the barn dance in the main hall of the Community Centre when a large crowd from other local photographic and walking clubs danced the night away.

Posted with thanks to Brian Morgan for the information.
